Barry Town has a long and rich history since the club was first formed back in November 1912.

According to local sources, football was played in Barry on an organised basis well before the turn of the century. However, the present Barry Town A.F.C was not formed until 1912, with the greatest honours for many years being the Welsh Southern League Championship in 1921 and a Welsh Cup victory in 1955.

It was in the 1980's that Barry came the fore as a footballing force, with the club winning five consecutive championships in the Welsh Southern League between 1982-3 and 1986-7, and a sixth following in 1988-9, the club finishing runners-up in the intervening year. The eighties were also marked by a number of Welsh Cup semi-final appearances and league cup trophies.

After a few lean years for trophies, Barry Town swept all before them in 1993/94. The Dragons won the Welsh Southern League First Division that season by a record 21 points, earning promotion to the League of Wales. It was their first clean-sweep of domestic silverware - winning the league, the Welsh Cup, the league cup and the FAW Trophy. The more tangible prizes for this success were entry into the European Cup Winners' Cup and promotion to the National League of Wales.

Under the stewardship of Paul and David Giles, the club won their first National League of Wales title in 1995-96.

Despite the success of the 1995-96 season, changes were made at Jenner Park, with the experienced Gary Barnett taking over as manager. Meanwhile, a second stand was built at Jenner Park to enable the club to stage the forthcoming UEFA Cup matches at home.

The qualifying round pitted Barry with Dinaburg of Latvia, and despite a goalless draw at Jenner Park, goals from Craig Evans and Chris Pike ensured that Barry stayed in the competition. They then went on to knock out Budapest Vasutas of Hungary, coming back from a 3-1 defeat in the first leg, to win on penalties at Jenner Park.

Barry played Scottish club, Aberdeen, former Cup Winners' Cup winners, in the next round, but despite a wonderful goal from assistant-manager, Richard Jones, Barry lost 3-1 in Scotland, and even though the club scored first in the return leg, Barry drew the home tie and lost out 6-4 on aggregate.

Despite that disappointment, Barry went on to win all three domestic competitions, winning the league with six matches to play, defeating Cwmbran Town in the Welsh Cup final and Bangor City in the League Cup.

The 1997-98 season continued that vein of form, with the club going through the entire season undefeated in the National League of Wales. Barry also held onto their League Cup trophy. In the European Champions' League, Barry were defeated by Dinamo Kiev of the Ukraine.

Again drawn against Dynamo Kyiv in 1999, Barry went out at the first hurdle, with the Ukrainians going on to the European Champions League semi-final. Barry maintained their grip on the domestic game, though, winning the League of Wales for a fourth successive time, beating Caernarfon Town 3-0 to win the Gilbert League Cup, and defeating Wrexham 2-1 to win the FAW Premier Cup.

The 1999-2000 season was a difficult year for the Dragons, who finished second in the League of Wales under Richard Jones. However, the club maintained its hold on the League Cup, thrashing Bangor City 6-0 in the final!

Under a new manager, Peter Nicholas, Barry regained their league title and did the double, beating Total Network Solutions in the Welsh Cup final.

The reward was a place in the Champions League, where Barry became the first Welsh side ever to win a Champions League tie, beating FC Shamkir of Azerbaijan home and away. That was followed by FC Porto of Portugal, where, despite defeat away from home, Barry showed their class by winning 3-1 at home against the eleventh top seeds in the Champions League.

Former West Ham defender, Kenny Brown, took over as manager, leading the club to a second consecutive double in 2001-02, winning the League of Wales by seven points over Total Network Solutions and defeating Bangor City 4-1 in the final of the Welsh Cup.

After a hard fought 2002-03 season, Barry held onto their Welsh Premier title, beating off the challenge of TNS in the final weeks, and taking a record number of points from a 34 match season.

Unfortunately all of Barry's recent success was no more substantial than a castle built on sand. Persistent rumours of massive debts suddenly erupted into reality in August 2003 as the club crashed into administration. Players and staff were locked out of the ground and the club began the 2003-4 season with a team of hastily-assembled local league players. The team made a disastrous start to the season, and a gradual infiltration of more experienced players as the season wore on could not save them from finishing bottom of the league and the humiliation for this proud club of relegation to the Welsh League for season 2004-5.
